Asher’s Week: Eagle Eye

Asher is really enjoying kindergarten, and it shows in his little smiling face that I get to pick up daily, when he says “That was a great day!”  We had confirmation of his good behavior/enjoyment on Wednesday when he got in the car, excited that he had received an award called the Eagle Eye award.  Everyday in class the kids say a chant of sorts that is an acronym of CHETS (the school name).  They strive to be Courteous, Helpful, Engaged, Trustworthy, and Safe.  His award was for being engaged.  It says “Asher is always engaged in class lessons.  He is always doing the right thing!”  Proud parents:).  We are thankful for great teachers.

I am one of the room moms of the class, and that gets me some access to be a fly on the wall.  His teachers are always happy to have help, as there is always so much to do in a kindergarten class of 38 kids!  Friday I went in and helped go through folders, and then worked with kids individually to see if they could order number cards from 1-30, and ask them to count up to 50 out loud.  It was fun, and I got to flex my old teaching muscles a bit as well.
One of the other subjects I got to see was writing.  They are working on sketching their idea, using labels, and then writing a beginning, middle and end.  With 5 year olds this is a sentence for each part.  I stayed for lunch, and during lunch Asher asked me very seriously “Mommy I have a question.  I am supposed to be writing about things that are real (or maybe he said true).  I want to write about Legoland, but it hasn’t happened yet (we are going for his birthday at the end of the month).  Do you think it’s still okay for me to write about it?”  I love the innocence and genuine concern.  Sweet boy.  So thankful I get to go in and help!  Thanks to Daddy for being in charge of little bit on Friday morning.
